App review – Bulba The Cat (iPod/iPhone/iPad)

February 2, 2011

10 word description: Bouncing cat navigates islands using accelerometer seeking stolen sushi. Bizarre.

10 word review: Fun tilting game, great level layouts, fat cat, graphically cute.

It’s like: Bagpuss on recreational pharmaceuticals reimagining Bounder on the ZX Spectrum. In 3D.

It’s better than: Being sensible.

It’s not: Casual. It pretends to be, but it’s not.

Average game time: Levels start off quite short, under 30 seconds, getting progressively harder and taking more time. By the time you get to level 30, you might be using up double figure attempts to beat each level. This doesn’t mean it’s frustrating, just occasionally bloody hard. Hard for a fat, pink cat, that is.

Arcadelife verdict: A fun, challenging and entertaining bouncing overhead platform game masquerading as a cute, casual diversion.
