Fish Draw review (iPod/iPhone)

February 17, 2011

10 word description: Match-3 style, classic & speed modes, different target each level.

10 word review: Surprisingly good variation on match-3 theme. Speed mode is challenging!

It looks familiar, but there's depth to it. (Fish/depth ... see what I ... Oh ok, you're a tough audience tonight.

It’s like: A match-3 game, but it has its own fishy identity and some subtle variations.

It’s better than: A heck of a lot of match-3 games that I’ve played.

Each level has a specific target. In this one, you need to make a chain of 4 green blobby things, 15 times.

It’s not: Dungeon Raid.

Average game time: I lost track. Like many supposedly casual games, you can get a bit distracted by it. That’s a good thing, if you were wondering.

Arcadelife verdict: Good game. For the first couple of screens, admittedly before I checked the help or paid any attention to the target details, I thought it was just another match-3, but I was wrong. I’ve played it quite a bit and it is a very good game with some nice, non-gimmicky variations on the classic match-3 theme. The two modes are both entertaining – speed mode rates you out of 3 stars on the time it takes you to reach each level’s target. Classic mode keeps a track of the highest score on each level. With the arrival of Dungeon Raid, competing in the match-3 genre became a lot more difficult. For a slick, fun, casual riff on it, this is about as good as you’re going to get without involving RPG elements. Anyway, if you prefer a cartoon style aquatic experience to swords, skulls and skills, this would be the one to go for.
