“Companions” – first look at an upcoming iPad game.

If you enjoy a good Dungeon Crawler RPG, as I do, you are going to be pleased to hear about a new iPad game, “Companions”, from small indie developers Smuttlewerk Interactive.

Smuttlewerk’s Martin Giaco contacted Arcadelife to share some information about the game, and the mention of a new Dungeon Crawler RPG coming to my iPad really got me interested…

“Companions” is a top-view “RPG/Dungeon Crawler/Roguelike” for Apple’s iPad, where you lead a team of four characters into real-time battles against the false god “Detexx” and the “Hordes of Nether”.

The game is playable as a campaign with a full-fledged storyline or as a single-map experience, packed with achievements and leaderboards. Both modes are single player only. Fight to save Altland or compare your battle prowess with players all over the world.

If your first thought is "Gauntlet, with a load of RPG features", you're thinking the same as me.

The party of 4 is made up from the following possible race/class cominations:

Minotaur – Berserker, Gladiator, Bull
Elf – Assassin, Archer, Ranger
Dwarf – Engineer, Draftsman, Miner
Human – Light, Matter, Void

The Minotaur is apt in close combat fighting. The Dwarf builds traps and tower structures. The Elf uses her deadly long range weapons. The Human is gifted with powerful magic spells. There are three classes available for each race and every class has unique skills and bonuses. Each class plays differently, so lots of replay value is guaranteed.

The game is played in real time, but through the use of the tactical pause you are able to issue orders to your characters while the enemies are frozen. The release will feature the campaign mode with an engaging story line and a survival mode featuring achievements and leaderboards. 


"Elf ... is about to die." - I can't wait to have a go at that!

So, who are Smuttlewerk Interactive? 

We are Martin Giaco and Ralph Kunz: two long time friends who decided to put their skills and their love of games to use. Besides making games we are playing together in a Hardcore-Band called “Hostile HodgePodge” for more than 15 years, so expect some guitar heavy music.

Both of us were kids in the era of the C-64 and I dare say we both spent countless hours playing the wonderful games that started to happen back then. In 1998 both of us entered the PC world. That happened mostly because of one game: Master of Orion II – an outstanding game.

 I told Martin that my immediate thought upon seeing Companions was that it made me think of Gauntlet.

You know, it’s a funny thing. When we started working on Companions we had something different in mind (turn-based tactics, a bit like Space Hulk with a fantasy theme), but as time went by it turned into a more action-oriented game. The real-time movement is the key and I’m sure it was the right design decision. You have a hectic “Gauntlet-like” experience, plus  you can utilize the tactical pause and give orders to your characters when the heat is on. 
I doubt I’m the only one who can’t wait to try out Companions. When can we expect to see it on the app store?
The game is to be released in May 2011. It will be published in English and German. Other languages will be integrated after the game has been released.
