Flick Golf! review (iPod/iPhone)

April 3, 2011

“Did I miss again? I think I missed again”

10 word description: Golf reinvented; no clubs, no rules; various modes, Game Center

10 word review: Addictive, quick-fix golf-based target shoot; in-flight spin & curve

Each course has a full fly-by intro that really shows off the graphics.

You will like this if you enjoy: Golf games, flick style target shooting, full Retina display games, multiple modes to beat.

A high score will unlock all but the final course. For that, you need 4 gold cups in previous courses. Yes, I know it says 3 - because I've already got one.

The good news: It’s golf but it isn’t; it’s addictive fun. Multiple courses all look great; UI & presentation are polished. The way they have reinvented videogame golf is to be applauded.

"Oi!, Who's been drawing all these bloody great circles on my green?!?!"

The bad news: Anyone looking for a proper golf game may initially be confused by this. Then they’ll get addicted to it and forget they were looking for a proper golf game.

One thing Flick Golf! consistently does is make you feel really good about your ball-flicking prowess...

... or lack of it.

Arcadelife verdict: This is videogame golf with the fuss and tedium removed. This would be be how you dream about golf – effortlessly flicking ball after ball into hole after hole or, if you were me, effortlessly missing hole after hole.

There's a good variety of courses and locations

The desert. It gets very windy here.

Instead of trying to simulate every tiny aspect of the real game, Flick Golf! says, “Here, flick this ball towards that hole and put some curve and spin on it at the last second.” Which works, and works rather brilliantly. Every few holes, a bit of wind is added, and each new course starts with about the same amount of wind that the previous one finished with. Instead of adding huge amounts of annoyance, as wind tends to do in videogame representations of golf, here it just provides more scope for curving and spinning, which in turn leads to more points. Because that’s what Flick Golf! is all about – high scores.

Get a couple of consecutive Hole-in-One shots for a good score!

Here’s the in-game guide to scoring points…

Overall, this is a truly great pick-up-and play game. Addictive, great looking, well presented, smooth, fast, almost endlessly challenging. No cartoon characters, no club selection, no +1 putting hats to unlock, just your flicking vs a cool selection of modes and courses.

Arcadelife rating: 86/100
