Golfstacle! review (iPod/iPhone)

April 18, 2011

“Everybody hits it farther than me
Just 8 more strokes then I reach a par 3”

It's supposed to be a contraction of Golf+Obstacle, but I saw Golf+Testicle and now I can't get it out of my head.

10 word description: Traditional overhead view mini-golf. 3 courses. One or two player.

On the one occasion when I look like getting a birdie, this happens.

10 word review: Clean, gimmick-free courses. Polished, fairly tough mini-golf challenge.

3 courses and vastly improved controls in version 1.2

You will like this if you enjoy: Mini-golf games, of which there are rather a lot on the app store…

Early holes are fairly straightforward.

The good news: The fairly serious looking courses are, for me at least, a welcome change from the forced wackiness of many recent mini-golf games on the iOS devices.

I do really like the clean, uncluttered style. This is me marvelling at the ball's ability to flip me the finger at every opportunity

The bad news: [Update] Version 1.2 has addressed the two main issues I had in the original review – the control method has been completely changed so that the game is now fundamentally playable, plus two unlockable courses have been added to what seem like a very limited 18 holes. So there isn’t too much bad news left…

I know, I can't believe it either!

Arcadelife verdict: This is a great example of an update completely turning a game around. What was initially a fairly unplayable game, due to unpredictable and annoying controls, is now a genuinely challenging and addictive mini-golf game. The addition of two new (unlockable) courses can’t be anything but a good. There’s now also a lite version if you’re still unsure.

One of the holes from the second course. The graphical style retains its understated charm, which is nice

What I originally said:  The shot power problem is directly related to the ball-hitting method. The swipe stroke is to be applauded as an attempt to use the touch screen in a positive way, but it just doesn’t work well enough. I’d recommend adding an optional control method involving a power meter and some kind of angle setting. Tragically unoriginal, I know, but it works and people are used to it. That control method has been completely replaced by a directional arrow that also serves as a power-meter, thankfully!

Well done - have a gold cup

It’s really encouraging to see this game being fixed at a basic level and vastly improved. Three courses feel much more like a full game than the original 18 holes. The Arcadelife rating has been increased from the original score (50) to reflect these improvements.

Arcadelife rating: 80/100

Version reviewed by Arcadelife is 1.2
