Sky Combat review (iPod/iPhone)

“I can drive (drive)
My very own tank”

10 word description: Military themed vertical shooter; 3 playable vehicles; upgrades; Game Center.

10 word review: Fabulous looking, polished throughout, entertaining vehicles and powerups, superb effects.

The missile smoke trails look great. Tip - remember to dodge the missiles ...

You will like this if you enjoy: Vertical shooters such as 1941/1942, Flying Shark, Raiden, SWIV.

There is a mixture of land and sea missions

The good news: This is a great looking and very fun vertical shooter, featuring playable air and ground vehicles, lots of upgrades, decent special weapons (rockets and air-strikes) and truly wonderful graphics and effects. In upcoming update (1.2) an option will be added to choose between Helicopter and Tank before starting a mission (possibly not all missions – tank flying over water … don’t think so!) – currently the vehicle is fixed depending on the mission.

Boom! Another enemy of freedom checks out

The bad news: There were a few things I would have criticised but they all appear to have been dealt with already in the update (1.1) that came out on March 4th. The major changes were the inclusion of relative touch control (my personal favourite), the ability to restart from the point you reached in a campaign, GC support and various UI tweaks.

End-of-level bosses are big, but fairly realistic. My chopper is glowing red because I'm about to explode. Ha ha ha

Arcadelife verdict: I was very pleasantly surprised by this game. I’d never heard of Sky Combat before getting it for review and it seems to be one that hasn’t had much hype, maybe because of the genre. It runs very smoothly, the effects are impressive (although explosions are not particularly varied) and the most important factor – gameplay – is consistently good.

Cool. I really can drive (drive) my very own tank!

The game also appears to be receiving regular updates and the developers are taking note of player comments and complaints, adding features and improving the game.

Carpet bomb your enemies back to the stone age with the "Airstrike" special weapon

Overall, this is a very entertaining and satisfying vertical shooter. It’s not utterly derivative but contains many familiar elements in a polished, visually impressive package.

Fill enough graves and you too can get a medal. Yay, war rocks!
