Cuddle Bears review (iPod/iPhone)

July 10, 2011

“I’m running free yeah, I’m running free”

Let's create a great game and give it a name that'll guarantee it won't sell. Great marketing blunders of the 21st century, number #756 in a series of 1000

10 word description: Endless runner. Cuddle bears slow your escape from bad wolf.

Ok, that's one nasty looking wolf. Don't let that bear cuddle you, no matter how cute it seems

10 word review: Addictive and polished, quite dark-themed runner. Bad name choice.

Ha ha, bounce on their heads ... give the wolf something else to eat for a while

You will like this if you enjoy: Endless runner games with visual, slightly nasty humour. Not quite as blatantly gruesome as Unpleasant Horse, but you do get to incinerate and run over (with a truck) cute little teddy bears.

Or just run 'em over with a truck. Their little ghostly spirits are quite cute too...

The good news: Here’s a surprisingly good endless runner with a few neat little twists, a slew of decent achievements and a very cool look.

A perfect bounce - with a little rainbow - is almost as hard to achieve as taking a screen shot of the event

The bad news: Ok, I get how the name is ironic but did nobody think this through? An app store search for “cuddle bears” brings this up along with a bunch of cute, pointless apps for the under threes. If I hadn’t been given this game to review, I would never, ever have looked at it. Because of the name. Can I make it any clearer? Good game let down by very, very ill-advised name choice.

Now I have a jet pack. Burn, you cuddly little bastards!

Arcadelife verdict: This is a very good endless runner that any fan of the genre will enjoy. The characters are weird, yet consistent; the challenge is pretty much spot on; graphics are good, frame-rate is good, combos and achievements add that essential “one more go” factor. Hard to fault. Apart from, you know, the stupid ****ing name.

Overall, it’s annoying for me to see a decent game like this get burned by its own name, and I have no link at all to this game apart from I’ve played it quite a few times. Fix the name. Please. It’s not too late.

Spot the Iron Maiden song...
