Powerslide Penguin review (iPod/iPhone)

July 21, 2011

“Slippin’ and slidin’, peepin’ and hidin’
Won’t be your fool no more”

10 word description: Slingshot penguin, collect valuables, dodge enemies. 79 levels. Game Center.

Characters from the intro cartoon strip pop up occasionally during the game to describe new game elements or to laugh at your failures

10 word review: A rather erratic enjoyment curve; there’s fun amongst the chaos.

When you zoom out, the obvious path becomes apparent. After the first few levels, the obvious path turns into a chaotic swipe-fest which is actually more fun than any attempt at clinically precise sling-shotting

You will like this if you enjoy: Slingshot games (kind of obvious); Puckerz would be a reasonable comparison.

Please tell me they didn't really call him Penn Gwynn

The good news: Instant, casual gameplay, decent graphics, decent framerate, lots of levels, a fair amount of variety between levels.

Pull back and aim, just like Angr... you know, that game.

The bad news: The combination of limited moves and a time limit, plus annoying obstacles and tricky positioning of items initially made me want to smack myself in the face with a mallet. However … I stuck with it because I figured the failings must be all mine, because they usually are. Eventually it dawned on me that I needed to just relax and embrace the slapdash chaos of the sliding penguin, rather than attempt to precisely control him. Some people may not be this forgiving or patient. Some people may actually want to collect all the coins on every level. Be warned – leave the mallet out of reach.

Oh great, I'm being chased by a stick of dynamite

Arcadelife verdict: Powerslide Penguin didn’t grab me from the start, but after giving in to the multiple “you lose” game mechanics (limited moves, timer, tricky level design, one-kill exploding enemies, pinball style bumpers) and just having a laugh with it, this game really isn’t too bad! I have a feeling that the HD version on an iPad might be quite a bit more fun, but I haven’t tried that version so it’s really just a wild guess.

Anyone playing videogames to build up their self esteem needs to reassess that particular lifestyle choice
