Crazy Invaders review (iPod/iPhone)August 14, 2011
♫ “I’m crazy for trying and crazy for crying”
10 word description: Defend Earth from the Crazy Invaders. Weapon upgrades, Game Center.
10 word review: Repetitive screen-tapping exercise plagued by response delay when firing.
You will like this if you enjoy: Simple screen-tapping shooter games. An example of another game in this genre would be Space Frak.
The good news: The graphics aren’t too bad, if you’re a fan of generic aliens drawn by a pre-schooler. The upgrades save it from complete monotony, just about.
The bad news: There’s always a delay between tapping and firing, which makes it seem like a deliberate design decision. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t enhance the gameplay at all. Most of the time you end up firing twice when you only wanted to fire once, because you didn’t realise that your first tap had registered. I don’t want to have to “get used to” this sort of negative game feature.
Arcadelife verdict: Not the most interesting, fun or attractive game I’ve seen this week, that’s for sure. I know there’s a market for supremely casual screen-tapping games with doodle-esque graphics but I think it’s time the makers of these games put a bit more effort into producing something at least remotely entertaining. The addition of Game Center leaderboards and achievements appears to be almost an excuse these days for putting out games with few redeeming features.
