Velocispider review (iOS / Universal)

October 3, 2011

“We are the endangered species
We can blow ourselves to pieces”

10 word description: Control a heavily armed araknasaur* in retro arcade shoot-em-up. (* Their word, not mine)

10 word review: Fun pixel art shooter. Tilt control, but it works well.

In addition to shooting everything, you have to defend your 3 eggs (white/green objects at the bottom of the screen) from being stolen

You will like this if you enjoy: Retro shooters such as Space Invaders, Galaxian, Galaga, etc. Pixel art. Fun shooters.

Static cutscenes between levels are amusingly unnecessary and rather bizarre

The good news: Tilt control suits this game and is surprisingly easy accurate (iPhone/iPod). I was concerned it would spoil the game for me, but it doesn’t. 16-bit Pixel Art style is great; lots of colour and detail on the varied enemies and the background. Gameplay is good, challenging without being stupidly difficult. Different enemy types have individual tactics, boss battles are satisfyingly fun. The game can be played one-handed. Excellent music.

This crab boss makes more than one appearance. Watch out for the claws that fall on you when damaged

The bad news: The tilt control could be a bit more of a negative on the iPad, although the game is no less fun than in iPhone/iPod. One-handed play isn’t recommended on the larger device!

Arcadelife verdict: Fun shooter with a nice retro style and plenty of content that thankfully doesn’t suffer from a lack of touch control.
