RAGE review (PC)

October 8, 2011

“Fall out, Fall out with all the leaders and gangs”

10 word description: First person shooter / 3rd person driver. Post-apocalyptic wasteland setting.

At least there aren't queues of people trying to get in here

10 word review: Stunning looking game. Great combat and driving. Impressive enemy AI.

This is the first character that you meet. We'll call him Mr Quest-Guy as that's more polite than Mr Generic One Dimensional Gruff Bloke In Charge

You will like this if you enjoy: First person shooters. Off-road driving games (where stuff blows up). Post-apocalyptic themed games (with guns and driving).

This is the first vehicle that you get a chance to drive / ride

The good news: Graphically, it’s truly fabulous. On my fairly old PC (admittedly with a couple of major components recently replaced) I get a constant 60fps, which I think is the main goal of the software. How does it do it? I don’t really care, I just enjoy playing a game that looks this good and runs this smoothly. Enemy AI and animation are very good, weapons are cool and the driving is a lot of fun and fits in seamlessly with the rest of the game. The wasteland setting is hardly original but it has never looked this good. Exteriors and interiors are full of detail and variety.

In standard videogame fashion, you loot junk off dead bad guys, sell it to Mr Shop Guy and use the money to buy new and better gear

The bad news: It’s a huge install, somewhere around 25gb. These days, that’s probably not particularly bad news unless you’re really pushed for space and don’t want to uninstall anything to make room for it. Beyond the fabulous graphics, great combat, fun driving and spectacularly realised wasteland setting, it’s ultimately “just another FPS” and it won’t change the mind of anyone who has decided they don’t like that type of game. Well, not unless they play it anyway…

The first worthwhile thing you will be able to afford is a simple scope for your pistol

Arcadelife verdict: I used to play loads of PC games, then my situation changed a bit, I had less time, and I also recently got heavily into iPod and iPad gaming (and running this site). I’ve only bought two PC games so far this year – Dead Space 2 (back in January) and RAGE. I’m definitely going to buy Skyrim as soon as it comes out, but that will be it for me and PC games in 2011. I really like RAGE; I think id have taken their concept of what a first person shooter should be like to the next logical level and produced a beautiful looking, high performing and fun combat/driving game that I doubt will lose them any fans.

If you wander about taking screenshots, sooner or later some bad guys are going to start shooting at you...

Arcadelife rating: 90/100

Version reviewed by Arcadelife is: Whatever Steam updated it to when I installed the game…
