Super Cyclone review (iPod/iPhone)

October 12, 2011

“Well, the answer lies outside, that cyclone
Where the spirit meets the speed, yeah”

10 word description: Dual-stick space shooter. Defend stargates, destroy waves of aliens.

Space is often a cool, purple place in videogames

10 word review: Visually appealing shooter; stargate protection adds challenge; Hi-scoring is tough.

I know it looks like I'm running away from them, but I'm not. Honestly

You will like this if you enjoy: Dual stick shooters. Modern looking (not retro) shooters.

The upgrades look great, then you realise they're consumables and it's not quite as exciting

The good news: Graphics and animation are good. Action is fast and colourful without becoming overwhelming, at least as far as I’ve managed to progress. Controls are generally ok.

More green aliens are lining up to be slaughtered. You'd think they'd learn, but they don't

The bad news: Occasionally I’ve started Cyclone mode by accident due to inadvertent double-taps. I think I’m going to be able to overcome these issues by concentrating more on what I’m doing, although it’s arguable that the controls could be improved to avoid accidental occurrences of Cyclone mode.

Winning isn't enough to earn any stars. You need to utterly humiliate the enemy in ways that are obviously far beyond my limited ability

Arcadelife verdict: This is a good, solid action game with a bit more to do than just spinning around shooting things, although there is plenty of that going on. Preventing the alien nests entering the stargate is a fairly tough challenge, and gives the gameplay a bit of depth beyond simply destroying the enemy waves. There’s no real problem with the controls, you just have to spend some time getting used to initiating Cyclone mode when you actually want it to happen, rather than at inopportune moments when you are jabbing the fire button in a panic.

This is what you want to avoid - the alien nest is entering the stargate. This = Game Over
