Sailor Dog review (iPod/iPhone)

November 9, 2011

“Ride a white swan like the people of the Beltane”

10 word description: Sail, bounce, fly & blast to high-score. Endless game.

Jump off the swan, bounce from balloon to balloon collecting bones. Don't fall in the water. But you'd already figured that out

10 word review: Bizarre, amusing theme; nice variation of endless runner/jumper gameplay.

This is some kind of power-up, possibly invincibility, which make the dog look like a ghost. Of course

You will like this if you enjoy: Casual endless games. Watching a sailing dog bouncing on an origami catfish.

Occasionally, something very big will fly past. Luckily, you receive a warning just before this happens

The good news: Odd and very attractive graphic style. Simple controls; a mix of tilt & tap which works well in this game. Fairly easy to do well, quite challenging to compete with online scores. Amusing and fun to play.

Sailor Dog temporarily becomes Superdog

The bad news: There’s just one mode – endless. I can hardly call this a flaw, as it’s the basic design of the game, but if you were hoping for star-rated challenge levels there aren’t any at the moment. There are no permanent upgrades or consumables that can be taken from one game to the next. Only one vessel type – the origami swan. (None of those are reasons not to play this game, just a vague wishlist…)

It's best to avoid giant seagulls

Arcadelife verdict: I’m always dubious when another endless style game pops up for review, because I keep telling myself that there’s really only so much that can be done with the genre. And, yet again, I’m proved wrong and I have to rethink my place in the cosmos and ask several deep and probing philosophical questions. Such as, “Why would a dog go sailing in an origami swan?” The answer is as easy as it is obvious – “Because it’s a ****ing videogame, you gonk”. And it’s a damn good one at that. I just think I’m going to end up with issues reviewing games like Oscura and Sailor Dog on consecutive days; it’s all just a bit too weird.

If I can manage 7th on the global leaderboard, there really aren't enough people playing this game
