The Last Rocket review (iOS/Universal)

January 2, 2012

“I’ll see you up there if you get the inclination”

10 word description: Guide ‘Flip’ through 64 rooms. 8-bit graphics. Chiptunes. Game Center.

Spikes? Hell, yeah!

10 word review: Retro classic look and feel, in an original iOS game!

You don't have to collect all the Memory Gears (yellow blobs) but you really want to

You will like this if you enjoy: The look and feel of retro games in a challenging and entertaining action/puzzle game.

Dexterity, timing, rudimentary intelligence. At some point, one or more of these will fail you

The good news: 8-bit style is done really well and completely suits the gameplay. Puzzles are excellent. It’s so good, you get fake deja-vu because you feel like you must have played a game this good at some point in the past, but you haven’t.

The UFO type spaceship needs to be rammed a few times in order to destroy it and remove the forcefield

The bad news: Not a lot. 8-bit haters obviously won’t like it, but what do they know?

Finding out that Flip (The Last Rocket) can duck is a wonderful moment

Arcadelife verdict: I had to check to convince myself that this wasn’t a genuinely old game that had been ported to iOS devices. It looks, sounds and feels like something from the golden age of 8-bit gaming. I’m enjoying it a lot and it’s an easy recommendation if you, like me, have somehow missed it so far. Great relative touch & swipe controls add to the experience.

Arcadelife played and reviewed this game on:
4th gen iPod Touch (OS 5.0.1)
iPad (OS 5.0.1)
Note – yes, I know this is a fairly old game but I just discovered it and it makes a great start to 2012’s reviews.
