10 Talismans review (iOS / Universal)

January 18, 2012

“You got a pretty strong hand
Backed up with your talisman”

10 word description: Oriental themed match-3 puzzle. Talismans / power-ups to collect. Game Center.

This is what it looks like on the iPod Touch - that's a lot of wasted space and some very small tiles

10 word review: Pretty, immediately familiar, could make better use of screen space.

You will like this if you enjoy: Similar epic-themed match-3 games such as Azkend, Heroes of Kalevala, Call of Atlantis, Treasures of Montezuma, Pantheon, etc. The app store isn’t exactly short of these games…

The good news: Colourful, with nice backdrops. Oriental music fits the theme. Simple, instantly accessible gameplay. A feeling of progression from completing the Talisman parts, unlocking powers, etc. Nice effects and animations.

The bad news: The match-3 grids don’t use enough of the screen space. This is particularly significant on the smaller iPhone/Touch screen, where the play area seems very restricted with a large border of backdrop that could have been used to make the tiles larger and the game easier to play. The small white text looks a bit unclear, have a look at some of the iPad screenshots here and see what you think.

Arcadelife verdict: It’s pretty, it’s derivative, it’s fun apart from the issue with screen space. Overall, it could have been better if a bit more consideration had been given to the grid size in relation to the screen sizes of the devices it is played on. For match-3 fans, particularly anyone who enjoys any or all of the games listed in the “You will like this if you enjoy” section above, this one gets enough right to easily appeal to you.
