Fancy Pants review (iOS / Universal)

March 2, 2012

“I only know what I’ve been working for
Another you so I could love you more”

10 word description: Leap, slide, sprint, smash. 2D hand-drawn platformer. Flash port.

So you're not exactly saving the world...

10 word review: Super cool. Behold the new benchmark for iOS platform games.

You will like this if you enjoy: Excellent platform games.

Fancy Pants Man sets off for a leisurely stroll

The good news: Graphics, sound, controls, level design, mini-games, fluidity of gameplay. All great and lots of it. The animations, particularly of the main character, are excellent.

The bad news: Crystal. No Game Center. What? Well, they had to get something wrong, I suppose, or the universe would have imploded.
Update (3rd March) – I’ve just lost ALL my progress – unlocked levels, best times, collected items… EVERYTHING. I’ve read that this has also happened to other people. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED.

The first boss fight is a relatively familiar timing and head-stomping exercise

Arcadelife verdict: After the recent run of enthusiastic but disappointing iOS platform games, it’s refreshing to have something like this on the app store. Ok, it’s essentially an old Flash game that you can play for free on your PC, but that’s really quite a small compromise when you’re getting a game as good as this.

The scribbled graphics subtly disguise razor sharp gameplay and a stunning blend of platforming conventions

The game world feels wide open, despite the linear level progression, with speed dashes blending into gravity defying backflips and underwater explorations. Optional time trials and bonus rooms appear regularly and you’re never sure what’s coming next as the game mixes up aspects of Sonic, Super Meat Boy and a game they haven’t invented yet called Ski-jump Parkour Hero versus Pirates.

It’s hard to recommend it enough without sounding like I’m a complete fanboy, but there you go. Get this game; you certainly won’t regret it.

Still not sure? Well here’s the free lite version for you to try.
