Sticky Sheep review (iOS / Universal)

March 4, 2012

*** Arcadelife’s 300th review ***

“And when you see a crowd I see a flock
It’s sheep we’re up against”

Arcade mode is unlocked when you complete all levels in the first zone

10 word description: Bounce and bash the sheep around onto their sticky pads. (Copied from app store description).

Concepts such as combo shots are introduced with fairly blatant examples that are hard to mess up, even if you try really hard

10 word review: Entertainingly addictive mash-up of mini-golf, pool trick shots and pinball.

The unlockable Arcade mode has much more of a chaotic pinball feel than the puzzles, almost a completely different game

You will like this if you enjoy: Mini golf, pool/billiards, pinball, ‘slingshot/puck’ style iOS games such as Puckerz!, also cute, casual physics games like Cut the Rope and House of Mice.

As you can probably guess, a gold rating involves collecting all the coins and finishing with at least one spare shot remaining

The good news: Cute cartoon graphics; decent drag/release launch control; amusing sounds (although not many of them); innovative mix of familiar game elements; quite a lot of fun to be had, even when it starts to get tricky.

The patches of brown dirt drastically slow down anything that touches them

The bad news: Occasionally, on the smaller iPod/iPhone screen, it zoomed when I meant to launch and vice versa. Not a major issue, and unsurprising on a touch screen. Also on the smaller devices, dragging near the edge of the screen is sometimes a bit of a chore. I didn’t really have any issues on the iPad.

Harder than you'd think, achieving a bullseye gains you a very helpful 2 extra shots

Arcadelife verdict: It’s hard to avoid starting the verdict with “Yet another cute, casual, physics game”, but it is one and that’s how many iOS gamers will react to it. However, I really like Sticky Sheep and I’m sure a lot of other people will like it too. The main difference between this game and the majority of similarly themed slingshot/golf style games is that the character that you launch isn’t the one that has to reach a particular destination. Successfully pulling off combo shots and clever (or very lucky) rebounds never seems to get old, and the speedy ‘retry’ option keeps your mind in the game and not wondering what might be on TV if you could be bothered leaving the bathroom.

Introduced in the third zone, black sheep can be used to collect coins, trigger switches, etc. but must not be sent into the blue targets

Overall, it’s a very good addition to the genre and it has enough of its own charm and challenge, not to mention some very fun and funny game elements, to make it a great choice for fans of casual/slingshot physics or really anyone fancying a fun and addictive new game for their i-device.
