Start The Rockets! HD review (iPad)

April 18, 2012

“Baby you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth”

10 word description: Brain-teaser puzzle game. Aim rockets, light one, ignite everything.

10 word review: Pyrotechnic puzzler looks wonderfully flashy and plays very well too.

You will like this if you enjoy: Puzzle games where you have to position various objects in order to achieve something, usually feeding some random animal or alien, but in this case creating a chain-reaction of fireworks.

The good news: It’s a puzzle game involving fireworks; that’s worth a polite round of applause on its own. The graphics, effects and idle animations of the individual rockets are all excellent. The background sounds are very atmospheric. Puzzle elements are introduced fairly frequently and there are loads of puzzles – 135 levels spread over 3 different worlds. The puzzles themselves  are challenging and entertaining.

The bad news: When you fail a level, all the objects are reset back to their starting positions. This adds a layer of repetition and frustration that the game does not need. Please look at a similar game, such as Feed That Dragon HD, and see how they handle this – they keep everything where you put it unless you manually choose to reset the level. I don’t want to start positioning everything from scratch each time I have to restart the level, it isn’t part of the fun. That’s the only issue I have with this game.

Arcadelife verdict: Apart from the complaint about the objects resetting every time you restart a level, this game is hard to fault and is a fun and challenging puzzler with novel firework visuals. I suppose if I was being hyper-critical (which I am) I’d suggest that the timer is redundant, only serving as a score mechanism and not contributing anything to the challenge or fun of the game. Overall, this is a great puzzle game with a unique theme and it looks very pretty on my iPad.
