Shuriken Chicken review (iPod/iPhone)

May 5, 2012

“We make an art of going too far”

10 word description: Endless runner; graphics hand-crafted from felt. Shuriken. Game Center.

10 word review: Smooth, responsive and uniquely styled runner. Fun and rather addictive.

You will like this if you enjoy: Horizontally scrolling endless runners with jumping, sliding and shooting. The swipe to jump/slide is similar to how it works in Temple Run. The feel of the game, for me anyway, is a bit like Lame Castle.

The good news: The felt graphics are very nice. Controls are moderately complex (for a side view endless runner) but responsive and easy to use. Unexpected rock/metal riff for the soundtrack and some nice, understated sound effects. The game is a lot of fun.

The felt cut-outs

The bad news: It’s a chicken. I would have much preferred a kitten; heck, it even looks more like a kitten than a chicken. Shuriken Kitten – go on, grab that name before someone else does.

Arcadelife verdict: Hidden gem. Seriously, if you’re an endless runner fan (or even if you’re not) you’re probably going to love this one. The controls are a bit more than the usual “tap to jump” as you have up and down swipes for jumping and sliding, plus you can tap anywhere on the screen to throw your shuriken at enemies. Power-ups, trampolines and some bizarre and varied felt enemies finish off what is a very enjoyable endless runner.
