Tile Pile review (iOS / Universal)

June 10, 2012

10 word description: Transform one word to another via path of valid words.

10 word review: Nice distraction for crossword addicts and semi-literate puzzle fans.

You will like this if you enjoy: Word puzzles. Solving crosswords, although this is not a crossword app.

Early puzzles, even on Expert, are not too hard

The good news: Challenging in various ways, most involving the player having a certain level of intelligence and a decent vocabulary. Word definitions as hints (at least in Normal mode) are excellent. A selection of ambient/relaxing background sound effects to choose from.

The bad news: A bit too serious and devoid of even a glimmer of humour (or colour). However, if that’s what you’re looking for in an iOS game, this will be perfect for you. Some IAPs to buy hints and extra content; I can’t even muster up the enthusiasm to criticise this again. No option to change the colour scheme; a bit of variety would be nice as the default is very beige / dull.

Arcadelife verdict: Pretty good; it definitely gets your brain working. The interface and overall presentation of the game are great. Lots of puzzles, even without spending additional money via IAPs. Overall, a nice word puzzle game that might even teach you something.
