Wawa Land review (iPod/iPhone)
June 19, 2012♫ “Wah-wah, you made me such a big star”
10 word description: 2D platformer. Traps, monsters, power-ups, wall-jumps, Game Center.
10 word review: Very good looking; varied zones; tougher than you might expect.
You will like this if you enjoy: Cute platform games where you bounce on enemies’ heads and collect a lot of coins.
The good news: Good performance, attractive and varied graphics, controls are pretty good, lots of enemies and power-ups, decent level design.
The bad news: It’s harder than I was expecting, although that’s not necessarily bad news. The numerous actions (backflip, double-jump) require control sequence memorisation and can be occasionally fiddly. Double-jumping doesn’t work in the traditional way, but involves two quick taps at the start of the jump – this sometimes fails due to not getting the timing right.
Arcadelife verdict: Minor control quibbles aside, Wawa Land is a pleasing Mario style platform game with a considerable amount of variety in the visuals, enemies, levels and power-ups. If anything, I’d say the difficulty is a little high, but this doesn’t really detract from the game’s overall playability and makes you concentrate more on what you’re doing and how you’re going to approach and defeat the various enemies.
Everything that you would expect from a game in this genre is here, plus some surprises. If you’re a platform game fan, Wawa Land comes highly recommended.
