Last Knight HD review (iOS / Universal)
January 2, 201310 word description: Endless jousting, jump and ride game made with Unreal Engine.
10 word review: Lovely graphics and characters; fun but spiked with occasional irritations.
You will like this if you enjoy: Endless runners with a “behind the character” viewpoint. Jousting! Giant spiders!
The good news: Once you swap the default control method for buttons, it becomes a heck of a lot less frustrating. The game visuals and overall level of polish in the menus, etc. are of a very high standard. The whole riding/dodging/jousting is put together well and the game is definitely fun most of the time. Earning game gold (for unlocking knights and buying power-ups) is very easy and does not require hours of grinding. Great use of audio cues to warn of approaching enemies, etc.
The bad news: Default controls are annoying, unreliable and lead to frustrating collisions and deaths. I really didn’t like the game until I found the option to change the controls and started using the buttons instead of the swiping. The restricted viewpoint, although probably a major element of the game design, does make it tricky to spot some upcoming hazards. Hitting targets on the left side of the path is tricky and can often cause an unexpected collision with the target structure, even after you have hit the target successfully.
Arcadelife verdict: Great looking game and a lot of fun once you change the control method. Much more of an auto-running action game than a typical endless runner, at least in my opinion.
