LEGO® App4+ review (iOS / Universal)

July 16, 2012

“I’m gonna pick up the pieces,
and build a lego house”

10 word description: Lego brick building, driving & collecting game for young children.

First, build your vehicle

10 word review: Nice, easy, non-frustrating kids’ game. My son likes it.

Then take your vehicle for a drive

You will like this if you enjoy: Letting your kids play on your iPad.

Deliver your cargo

The good news: Decent graphics – some nice parallax scrolling in the driving sections. The Lego blocks are clear and colourful. Controls are pretty good; I can forgive the huge on-screen buttons in an app like this. Some nice introductions to basic gaming concepts, such as collecting items to unlock additional content, completing stages with different vehicles, using two different buttons to perform different actions, etc. A very cheerful game with no violence or destruction.

Unlock and build various items of background scenery

The bad news: There’s no option to pause/quit once you’re in a driving section. The “reset all” button has no “are you sure” – oops!

Collect coins to unlock additional vehicle components

Arcadelife verdict: I love the app store, I really do. Where else can you see dozens of otherwise completely anonymous and pointless people lining up to show the world how stupid they are? To all the elite gamers posting 1 star reviews of this game with comments such as “Boring I completed it in a few seconds” – congratulations, you are not a 4 year old child. Well done, now don’t forget to let the door labelled “Morons This Way” hit you in the ass on your way out.

Depending on what you build, it can drive and jump or fly

Personally, I’d say the game is suitable for 3-5 year olds rather than the 4-7 age range mentioned in the app description. My son (4) has completed the whole thing more than once with almost no assistance from me, although he already tends to prefer playing other iPad games such as Darius Burst and Catapult King. Note to concerned do-gooders – No, I don’t let him play games on the iPad all the flippin’ time; half an hour, one day a week is about all he gets. Ok? Thanks.

Arcadelife rating
Rated as a game for young children, rather than for the uber-gamers who just get it because it’s free and then have a meltdown when it’s a bit easy for them…
